The Streets

The streets of Saltaire were built over a period of about 15 years from 1854. The streets were usually named after members of Sir Titus Salts family. For example: Elliot Street & Caroline Street.

However, there are some exceptions, for example some streets are named after royalty, and the architects Lockwood and Mawson. A few short streets were named after flowers popular at the time.It has also been suggested that the names Daisy, Fern and Myrtle were the names of Lady Caroline Salt’s maids however there is no evidence to support this.

The naming of the streets is mainly of births and marriages of Salt’s children and grandchildren, and so the naming of the streets lead to an improved understanding of Salt's family.
