Sir Titus Salt

The founder of Saltaire: Sir Titus Salt was born in Moreley, near Leeds in 1803 to Congregationalist parents. Titus Salt was the eldest of 6 children.
In 1822, his father owned a 100 acre farm. later on Daniel left the farm and came to Bradford to start in his own bussiness as a woolstapler. Then at 18 Titus Salt joined his father and learned all the tricks of wool trade. He travelled to London, Liverpool and Lincolnshire (which were big journey's in them days) and started to learn about different types of wool and how to buy and sell between farmers and wooltraders.
When Titus was 28 he bought some Donski wool from Russia but couldn't sell it as the tangled fibres made it hard to process. Titus didn't give up at that point though ; he bought a mill and began to spin the wool himself. his mill was successful and he bought four more mills in the centre of Bradford.
In 1830 Titus Salt married Caroline and they had 11 children, all of whom had a treet named after them in Saltaire.
